"The least jokey of Shelton's films to date and arguably the most satisfying...A predictably first-rate turn by Falco is no news here, but Duplass' deeply felt performance is." - John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

"[Shelton] delivers a personal best to date...Duplass is perfect as the guileless hero." - Dennis Harvey, Variety

Indie stalwart Shelton specializes in uncomfortable situations, whether it be the two hetero friends who decide to make a gay porn film in HUMPDAY, or the houseguest who sleeps with the lesbian sister of the woman who secretly loves him in YOUR SISTER'S SISTER. After serving twenty years of an undeserved murder sentence, 38-year-old Chris (Duplass of "Transparent," who also co-scripted) is released, thanks to the tireless efforts of his high-school English teacher Carol (Falco). Readjusting to life in his rainy Washington hometown proves awkward - his friends have all moved on to adulthood and family-raising, while he remains in a kind of arrested adolescence. Things become more awkward when Chris pursues his attraction to Carol, trapped in a passionless marriage, and even more awkward when her teenage daughter Hildy (Dever of "Justified"), alienated by her parents' discord, develops an interest in Chris. Negotiating a delicate balance between cringe comedy and compassionate coming-home drama, Shelton achieves new highs in emotional depth and character complexity, enhanced by a rich Andrew Bird music score.
