“The dance is the thing in POLINA…a film that takes dance as seriously as its protagonists.” — Boyd van Hoeij, Hollywood Reporter

“Thrilling…a film for those who love dance.” — Vittoria Scarpa, Cineuropa

Trained rigorously from childhood for the Bolshoi, young ballerina Polina (Shevtsova) turns her back on ballet stardom, her working class parents’ dream, in order to work in France under a strict but soulful avant-garde choreographer (Binoche, who performs her own stunning avant-garde dance sequences). Polina takes a hard journey through doubt, disillusionment, and homelessness before finding her own authentic way in partnership with a charismatic self-taught performer she meets dancing in the streets (Belingard, principal dancer of the Paris Opera Ballet). Co-directors Müller and renowned French choreographer Preljocaj adapt the graphic novel by Bastien Vivès for a tale authentic in every detail of its breathtaking choreography, from classical ballet to modern dance to street-inspired break-dancing. In Russian and French with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)
