"Once seen, the Quays' work cannot be shaken ... It's a scary, wondrous place to visit.” – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

"Dazzling ... one of Christopher Nolan’s greatest accomplishments." – Zack Sharf, Indiewire

This special presentation brings together visionary filmmakers from opposite ends of the production scale. Longtime Quay devotee and celluloid champion Nolan curates a program of classic stop-motion animations by the US-born, UK-based, Eastern European-influenced identical twins, presented in gorgeous new 35mm prints and augmented with Nolan’s new short documentary QUAY (2015, USA, 9 min.). Three of the Quays’ elusive, insinuating, eerily beautiful microcosms are featured: IN ABSENTIA (2000, UK, 20 min.), with an original score by Karlheinz Stockhausen, depicts the inner world of an asylum-incarcerated woman whose obsessive letter-writing makes Jack Torrance look like a dabbler. In COMB (1991, UK, 18 min.), inspired by writings by Robert Walser, a sleeping woman is the link to a richly colored dream world inhabited by peripatetic ladders, miniature trees, and a cracked-faced porcelain doll. STREET OF CROCODILES (1986, UK, 21 min.), loosely based on a story by Polish author Bruno Schulz, is the Quays’ most celebrated, most expensive, and arguably creepiest film, in which a puppet figure explores a labyrinthine city populated by dancing screws, a trio of hollowed-eyed dolls, and a ghastly tailor shop. 35mm.
