"Beautifully resonant...at once a summing-up of the Tavianis' filmmaking and an affirmation of their unshaken belief that human life is an uneasy compromise between the private and political spheres." - Deborah Young, Hollywood Reporter
RAINBOW marks over sixty years of filmmaking for the illustrious Taviani brothers (with Paolo receiving sole director credit this time, and older sibling Vittorio serving as co-screenwriter), and their ability to create powerful, at times startling images remains undiminished. Adapting Beppe Fenoglio's 1963 novel, they return to the subject of their 1982 masterpiece THE NIGHT OF THE SHOOTING STARS with another tale of Italian Resistance fighters during World War II. This time the tone is more romantic, with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Wuthering Heights" the main reference points, and mist and fog the central recurring imagery. A bookish Resistance fighter using the alias Milton (Marinelli) comes upon a hilltop mansion that triggers memories of the golden prewar days of his romance with the beautiful and elusive Fulvia (Bellè). When his best friend (and possible romantic rival) Giorgio is captured by the Fascists, Milton desperately sets out to obtain a hostage to exchange for Giorgio, embarking on an eerie journey through a hilly Piedmont landscape haunted by war and memory.
