"What a treat it is to watch one master of world cinema honor another...It's like taking an intimate master class on auteur cinema in which one's peers are masters in their own rights with not a hint of egotism." - Pat Mullen, POV Magazine

As part of this year's centenary tributes to Bergman (including a recently concluded three-month retrospective at the Gene Siskel Film Center), celebrated director von Trotta (THE GERMAN SISTERS, HANNAH ARENDT) contributes this rich documentary portrait. Beginning on the rocky beach where the first scene of THE SEVENTH SEAL takes place, Von Trotta recalls her own first viewing of the film and how it inspired her. She is followed by other leading filmmakers who discuss Bergman's work and its importance to them, including Jean-Claude Carrière on Bergman's influence on the French New Wave, Olivier Assayas on the importance of Bergmann's actresses, and Liv Ullmann on her first meeting with her future mentor. Interwoven with these testimonials are insights into Bergman's life and working methods, including an extended, revelatory passage on his dark period of self-imposed exile after he was arrested by the Swedish government in 1976 for tax evasion.
