"If Andrei Tarkovsky had grown up in rural Ireland, he might have made a biographical cine-memoir as luminously beautiful…a mesmerizing modernist memorial to ancient Celtic traditions." - Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter
This poetic portrait of the life of traditional Irish folksinger Joe Heaney is less a documentary than a set of impressionist tableaux that capture the mood of the hard, spare life of Heaney's rural childhood and the footloose career as a laborer and pub-singer that finally takes him to America. Elegant black-and-white cinematography gives the vistas of County Galway a timeless quality, and beautifully accentuates the underlying gravity and melancholy of many of the vocal performances. Archival footage of Heaney himself blends seamlessly with dramatic reenactments. A must-see for any devotee of traditional Irish music. In Irish Gaelic and English with English subtitles.
