“Shrewdly (and often hilariously) captures both the seriousness and absurdity of sex.” — Melissa Anderson, Village Voice

“Putting the Queer back into queer cinema, and the art in auteur…creates strikingly unusual emotional textures. — Craig Takeuchi, Georgia Straight

An overriding theme of the predator gives STAYING VERTICAL’s mystery wrapped in voracious sexuality an ominous edge that is the specialty of director Guiraudie (STRANGER BY THE LAKE). Within the space of a few hours, Leo, a callow screenwriter on a hiking holiday, impulsively propositions a local youth, has a confrontation with a threatening recluse, and conceives a child on a hillside with a young woman tending her sheep. Leo is in time left with a newborn, as the line between reality and dreams becomes blurred. Elements real and metaphorical, mythical and Biblical, blend with a fiercely unsettling ecological message in which the land itself vibrates with danger. In French with English subtitles. Note: Contains nudity and sexual activity. DCP digital. (BS)
