"Sweepingly romantic…the most roundly satisfying film Wenders has made since [WINGS OF DESIRE]." - John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

"Sterling performances from stars Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy…the duo exhibit a sexy and emotional chemistry that goes miles towards selling their intense and rapid romance." - Kate Erbland, Indiewire

Wim Wenders keeps moving down the road, a restless traveller whose outsized curiosity spans continents, genres, generations, and the tenuous divide between documentary and fiction. Based on Scottish author J.M. Ledgard's international bestseller, SUBMERGENCE encompasses grand crashing-surf romance, dangerous espionage, international terrorism, and environmental crisis, all wrapped around the central metaphors of water and enveloping depths. The film begins with two lovers torn apart - Dani (Vikander) in a deep-sea submersible, James (McAvoy) in an Al Qaeda hellhole. Doubling back in time, we see them fall intensely in love at a Normandy seaside resort, before embarking on separate missions: James as a British spy seeking to infiltrate an Al Qaeda terrorist base in Somalia, Dani as a marine scientist searching the deepest layer of the ocean for clues to the sustainability of life on earth. Wenders takes his trademark crosscutting to an almost mystical level, interweaving the two separated lovers and bringing them to a climax of operatic grandeur. In English. DCP digital. (MR)
