“A transgressive explosion…sets this film apart from all the known images about Iran.” — Fabien Lemercier, Cineuropa

“Absurdist energy and comic wit…Soozandeh keeps all the plates spinning with a stunning virtuosity.” — Kurt Halfyard, Screen Anarchy

This boldly evocative adult animation dares to tell a story of Tehran’s darkest corners, where Pari, a middle-aged prostitute with a young child, stoically plays the bad hand dealt to a woman of her station, even as fate ironically makes her a trusted player in the lives of others. Conned and used by a crooked judge, and unable to negotiate a divorce from her jailed drug addict husband, Pari crosses paths with a pregnant neighbor with a secret that her husband and in-laws must never know, and with an engaged woman in desperate need to have her hymen repaired after an ill-considered tryst with a musician. The noisy streets of the city are alive in harsh colors and with forbidden nightlife in Soozandeh’s stark vision of a milieu in which the modern metropolis coexists with the ancient rules and systemic corruption that thwart dreams. In Persian with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
