“A wild, absurdist, crazy-quilt, soaring flight of bat-bleep fantasy.” —Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

“Its existence at all is a bona fide miracle…the single best Gilliam film to hit theaters in 20 years.”—David Fear, Rolling Stone

As grandiose, foolhardy and brave as the hero of the literary classic that inspired it, this fabled, much-anticipated bucket-list project nearly sank the career of maverick Monty Python alum Gilliam (BRAZIL, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS). After a quarter-century of tries and misses featuring revolving-door casting (detailed in the documentary HE DREAMS OF GIANTS, playing Jan. 3 and 5), the final product achieves a dream star-pairing with Pryce as the flighty, demented shoemaker who believes he is Don Quixote, and a wackily energetic Driver as the crass, bombastic Hollywood director-turned-auteur, whose long-ago student film comes back to haunt him just as inspiration fails. Cervantes is present in spirit as Gilliam piles wild excess atop loony flights of fancy that freely mix slapstick and forays into contemporary satire (asylum-seekers, Russian oligarchs, and terrorists), culminating in a delightfully chaotic action-packed finale that throws narrative to the winds.
