"Weighty matters, tackled with a wonderful lightness of touch...always deft, engaging and teeming with ideas." — Jonathan Holland, Hollywood Reporter

"Its low-key comedy reflected in camerawork that at times recalls Oliveira, THE APOSTATE is inflected with a sense of mischief and wonder that teeters on the edge of the devotional." — José Teodoro, Cinema Scope

Matters of faith are treated with a light absurdist touch in this low-key and sneakily subversive comedy that has first-time actor and co-screenwriter Ogalla playing Gonzalo, a would-be religion-renouncing version of himself. A perennial philosophy student pushing forty, Gonzalo has an ongoing crush on his pert blonde cousin, a bedtime arrangement with a downstairs neighbor whose precocious kid he tutors, and an obsession with removing his name from the baptismal records of the Catholic church. Enlightenment via the ancient, labyrinthine ways of ecclesiastical evasion comes at the price of a virtual kick to the seat of the pants. In Spanish with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
