“Paula Ortiz has refreshed Lorca’s timeless masterpiece and made it into a kind of epic female western, dripping with beauty and misfortune.” — Alfonso Rivera, Cineuropa

The powerful themes of passion, fertility, and death of Federico García Lorca’s play "Blood Wedding" find new expression in the earthy visual poetry of this darkly tragic adaptation. Director Ortiz contrasts the sensual promise of a young bride’s lush body and the rich trappings of the pending wedding with the foreboding aridity of a desert landscape as a fatal love triangle plays out. Flashbacks hint at the inseparable friendship of three young companions, a girl and two boys, with the girl in love with them both. A blood feud divides families forever, until the fateful wedding day when an interloper on horseback comes to claim his woman from under the very nose of the groom. Nominated for twelve of Spain’s Oscar-equivalent Goya Awards, and winner of two. In Spanish with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 at 2 PM: A panel discussion will take place after the screening. Panelists include Goodman Theatre Resident Artistic Associate Henry Godinez, University of Chicago Associate Professor of Spanish Literature Miguel Martinez, and poet/local scholar Rey Andujar.
