"Stunning Danish thriller...tense, continually surprising." - Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com

"A deeply unsettling thrill ride...filled with blood-boiling twists and turns, keeping viewers on their toes without sacrificing any of its unmatched forward momentum." - Brian Thompson, Film Threat

Asger Holm (Cedergren), a police officer demoted to taking emergency calls, handles the usual roster of overdosers and fleeced johns with efficiency and an air of contempt. Then a desperate call comes in from a woman imprisoned in the back of a speeding van driven by her estranged husband; a check on her home implicates the husband in a far more serious crime, with worse to come if he isn't stopped quickly. THE GUILTY has all the elements of a top-notch nail-biter...until the rug is pulled out, and we find ourselves dealing with factors much more complex and disturbing, as the real meaning of the film's title becomes chillingly clear. With superb acting, sharp writing, and tight direction, this nifty Nordic noir parlays a pared-down set of ingredients - a police station, the offscreen outside world, and the cop on the phone who connects them - into a thriller that is both gut-wrenching and brain-teasing. In Danish with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (MR)
