“Breezily entertaining…Bill Nighy is a complete hoot.” — Allan Hunter, Screen Daily
“The charming, rousing WWII romance THEIR FINEST is a film that openly stumps for two causes: the value of women in the workplace, and the power of cinema to tell stories that people need to hear.” — Noel Murray, The Playlist
Danish auteur Scherfig (ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS) leapt over language and culture barriers with the greatest of ease in her multi-Oscar-nominated AN EDUCATION, and she deftly tackles another echt-British subject in this heartfelt, humor-filled tale of love, moviemaking, and emerging feminism in wartime London. Welsh transplant Catrin (Arterton) stumbles into a job in the filmmaking division of the Ministry of Information, where she crosses swords with cynical fellow-writer Buckley (Claflin). As an antidote to dry propaganda films, they collaborate on a juicy potboiler depicting derring-do at Dunkirk, but, between the Blitz and the bureaucrats, it’s a constant struggle to keep the project on track. The superb supporting cast includes Richard E. Grant, Jeremy Irons, Eddie Marsan, Helen McCrory, and especially Bill Nighy, who nearly steals the film as a gloriously vain actor given a chance to revive his flagging career. In English.
