"Supremely haunting...a loving, lovely work by a master filmmaker." — Ray Pride, Newcity

"Reminded me of such classics as Otto Preminger's ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959) and Krzysztof Kieslowski's A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING (1988), which is to say that THE THIRD MURDER merits comparison with the finest films on the subject of justice." — Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader

Ex-con Misumi (Yakusho of HARA KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI), newly paroled after serving thirty years, readily confesses to killing his former employer in yet another savage murder. Public defender Shigemori (Fukuyama of LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON), challenged to save Misumi from the death penalty, faces the enigma of a seemingly docile client who slyly changes his testimony and leaks bizarre tales of insurance fraud, family secrets, child abuse and adultery. The truth is everywhere but in the courtroom as an increasingly convoluted investigation brings defendant and defender face to face in mirror image of each other. Director Kore-eda (winner of the 2018 Palme d'Or at Cannes for SHOPLIFTERS), renowned for his sensitive family dramas, moves in an intriguing new direction with this gripping hybrid - part film noir murder mystery and part deeply provocative psychological drama. In Japanese with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)
