  1. THE TREE OF LIFE
  1. 2011, Terrence Malick, USA, 139 min.
  2. With Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain

“The sheer beauty of the film is almost overwhelming.”
—A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"The only other film I've seen with this boldness of vision is Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY."
—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Malick’s long-awaited fifth feature was the winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and a work that has both delighted and dismayed its critics. While variously hailed as a masterpiece, savored as a tender, bittersweet portrait of childhood, and derided as a religious tract, there is no doubt that the film strives for beauty and meaning on a monumental scale. Malick zeroes in on life at its most primal, from the creation of the universe in Biblical-inspired imagery to father-son and sibling rivalries depicted with raw and seemingly autobiographical accuracy. It’s likely to be a contender at Oscar time, so see it for the first time or see it again. 35mm. (BS)
