"His most accessible and satisfying early film." - Glenn Erickson, DVD Talk
Winner of Bergman's first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, this haunting parable is based on a medieval ballad. Sent on a religious errand by her stern father (von Sydow), an innocent girl is raped and murdered in the woods by two brutish goatherds, setting in motion a harrowing drama of revenge and redemption. Filled with starkly beautiful images, this was Bergman's first full collaboration with the great cinematographer Sven Nyqvist. In Swedish with English subtitles. New DCP digital restoration. (MR)
