After relocating from Iran to Denmark, the Avaz brothers (director Mehdi and co-screenwriter Milad) made their feature debut with this fact-based drama that stakes family and romantic relationships on a reckoning with past guilt and tragedy. Kristian (Jessen) is living with his fiancée and working on a fishing boat in Northern Denmark, when his surrogate father's terminal illness calls him back to the hometown that he had fled years before. There he is plunged back into the unquiet past, when he was taken in by a family whose golden-boy son Tobias (Groth) and daughter Trine (Christiansen) became his best friend and lover, respectively, until a catastrophic event shattered the bond between them. The intricately structured narrative interweaves past and present to peel back layers of buried resentment and guilt, suspending Kristian between two lives and compelling him to make a choice. Nominated for five Danish Film Academy awards, including Best Picture. In Danish with English subtitles. Courtesy of UniFrance Films, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Europa International, and Europa Cinemas. DCP digital widescreen. (MR)
