"Funny, entertaining and sneakily profound.” — Sheila O’Malley, RogerEbert.com

"Every once in a while, a small, unheralded film comes along, so smart and funny, such a pleasure to experience, you can't believe your luck." — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

Director Waititi (of the vampire hit WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS) tops himself with this inspired comedy adapted from Barry Crump’s novel "Wild Pork and Watercress." They can’t stand each other, but two rebellious runaways, Ricky (Dennison), an ungainly thirteen-year-old Maori foster kid with a badass reputation, and Hec (Neill, in one of his best roles in years), a curmudgeonly hunter, ditch civilization and take off into the New Zealand bush, pursued by police and child welfare authorities. Thanks to the sparkling intelligence of the writing, the simmering characterization of old-pro Neill, and the goofball appeal of child actor Dennison, it’s heartening and sharply comic without a hint of sentimentality.
