Chicago premiere!

  1. ZERO BRIDGE
  1. 2008, Tariq Tapa, India, 96 min.
  2. With Mohamad Imran Tapa, Taniya Khan

“A moving slice of life from a corner of the world usually seen only in news reports or as a mountainous backdrop for Bollywood musicals.”
—Mike Hale, The New York Times

"A filmmaker of enormous promise and precocious maturity. Tapa’s poetic neorealism is less a stylistic intrusion than a keeping of faith.”
—Ella Taylor, Village Voice

Set in Kashmir, a disputed region of India rarely seen in films, this impressive first feature is an invigorating mixture of Third World neorealism and noir-inflected couple-on-the-run romance. Restless teenager Dilawar aspires to be a pickpocket; his first victim is a young woman named Bani. He is quickly arrested, but their paths cross again--the stealing of her passport has prevented her from leaving the country, and, faced with an arranged marriage, she convinces Dilawar to run away with her. Exploiters and victims are linked in a vicious circle, and it all leads to a fateful rendezvous at Zero Bridge. In Kashmiri and Urdu with English subtitles. HDCAM video. (MR)
