"Niki Caro has the rare ability to elevate what could be emotionally manipulative schlock to earnest art...she delivers a singular, thrilling portrait, filled with surprises and moving performances." — April Wolfe, Village Voice

"A show-stopping performance from Jessica Chastain...Caro unspools an evergreen tale about the clarifying power of empathy to diffuse fear and hatred." — Katie Walsh, Chicago Tribune

Niki Caro (THE WHALE RIDER) reinvigorates the Holocaust drama and the World War II story in general with the distinctively feminine perspective of this tense and moving tale based on an incredible true story. Jessica Chastain is already attracting Oscar buzz for her tough and tender performance as Antonina Zabinski, who, together with her husband Jan (Johan Heldenbergh), is running the idyllic Warsaw Zoo when the Nazis take over in 1939. Working now under the command of German zoologist Lutz Heck (Brühl), the couple manage to hide hundreds of Jewish refugees — Jan smuggling them in a garbage truck while Antonina plays the dangerous game of using Heck's attraction to her as a means of diverting his suspicions.
