“Heartfelt…the driving force here is a beguiling performance from Alba August as the girl who survives a wrenching transition into a woman.”--Wendy Ide, Screen Daily

"Absorbing...Under Christensen's astute direction, the actors never descend into bathos."--Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader

The 1920s coming of age of a Swedish girl who would become the creator of the beloved "Pippi Longstocking" children’s books is a story of a more perilous sort in this arresting biopic charting a young woman’s triumph over life’s early pitfalls. Fictional Pippi may be the daughter of a buccaneer, but brightly curious Astrid Lindgren (August) is the non-conforming child of a sternly religious farm family, learning to navigate the dark waters of repression and hypocrisy. As a naive intern at her hometown newspaper, she falls in love with the married-but-separated editor, father of her best friend. Pregnancy and shame follow, Astrid’s dreams of a career seemingly dashed in the face of the hardship and struggle that will forge her into a woman whose imagination is her salvation. Director Christensen (SOMEONE YOU LOVE) frames the story as a flashback, as the elderly and revered author reflects on her past, with the performance by Alba August as young Astrid as the film’s vibrant core. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Foreign Language Feature, Chicago International Film Festival. In Swedish and Danish with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)
