“One of the most important films you will ever see in your life.”—Chuck Foster, Film Threat

“Remarkable…offers up a rare firsthand account of war from a strictly female perspective.”—Jordan Mintzer. Hollywood Reporter

It takes the intimate perspective of a filmmaker who is a wife and mother to make the horror and devastation of armed conflict real like no other previous documentary on the Syrian civil war. As an Aleppo university student studying marketing in 2012, Waad Al-Khateab begins shooting a video diary. She falls in love with medical student Hamza, who works at a volunteer hospital treating the wounded, and the two marry quietly amid full-fledged war. Over the course of four years, she helps in the hospital, gives birth to two children, lives amid rubble and death, and unflinchingly records their life, steeped in images of human suffering and grief. As the city empties and the destruction and killing escalate from the incessant bombing of civilians by Assad’s forces, Al-Khateab begins to realize the significance of her video blog as a one-of-a-kind testimony to the world. In Arabic and English with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
