“A major artistic achievement…follows the lead of Isao Takahata’s masterful GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES.”— Peter Debruge, Variety

“Realistic and moving…compellingly dark and accurate.”—Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter

Based on the filmmaker’s mother’s journey, this evocative hand-drawn animation conveys the emotion and undying hope inherent in the heartbreaking saga of a family’s persecution under Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge. Vibrant street scenes bursting with color and sound give away to a view of the happy home life of young mother Chou, her husband Khoun, and their four-year-old son Sovanh in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh. Normalcy turns to chaos in the blink of an eye with the capture of the city by Pol Pot’s brutal army. Chou and her extended family join millions of the city’s residents on a forced march into the countryside, where little Sovanh becomes separated from his parents. Years of starvation, beatings, and forced labor can’t extinguish Chou’s dream of a family reunited. Winner of Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. In French with English subtitles, with voices by Bérénice Bejo (THE ARTIST) and Louis Garrel (THE DREAMERS). DCP digital. (BS)
