“Smoother than café au lait…clever, wonderfully acted…makes room for jokes.”—Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

“A new treasure from one of France’s most vital filmmakers…powered by a quartet of superb performances—including another jewel-like turn from Juliette Binoche.”—Jon Frosch, Hollywood Reporter

Adultery is the pastime du jour for a clutch of Parisian sophisticates in this atypically light and briskly farcical romantic comedy from the director of PERSONAL SHOPPER and CLOUDS OF SILS MARIE. The marriage of book publisher Alain (Canet) and TV star Selena (Binoche) is the crucible in which the relationships in their intersecting career and social lives are forged and tested. Assayas creates stinging satire around Alain’s publishing world power plays, including the casual slap-down that will come back to bite him, involving scruffy down-on-his-luck author and unlikely lothario Leonard (Vincent Macaigne). The intellectually-minded smart set can’t get enough of dissing Leonard’s fiction, with its thinly disguised accounts of affairs and peccadillos, but gossip provides a handy smokescreen for Selena, who is up to some rollicking romantic mischief of her own. In French with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
