“Keeps focus on the great tenor’s talent and charisma…[an] unabashed love letter of a documentary.”—Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

“Some opera stars are simply too bright to fade...trust a pro listener: you want to experience ‘Vesti La Giubba’ and ‘Nessun Dorma,’ two of the highlights of PAVAROTTI, on the big screen, in stereo.”—Zachary Lewis, Plain Dealer

No added cinematic flourishes are required for the story of the great Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, “King of the high Cs,” to inspire awe. Director Howard (APOLLO 13) wisely plays it straight, letting the images and voice of his larger-than-life subject prevail, in a chronology that takes the artist from childhood in Modena, Italy, the son of a baker, to early first marriage, fatherhood, and the breakthrough success in a Covent Garden production of La Bohème that led to his rapid rise to international superstardom. This is a film that delivers personality, warmth, and generous performance clips covering the breadth of Pavarotti’s career, encompassing legendary operatic roles, concerts, and recordings including The Three Tenors, and disaster-aid events with stars including Bono and Liza Minnelli. Howard secures first-ever interviews with Pavarotti’s first wife Adua Veroni, his three daughters, his second wife Nicoletta Mantovani, and others who add perspective on the star’s sometimes tangled personal life. DCP digital. (BS)
