A Note on Public Health (Updated March 16 2021)

Dear Friends of the Gene Siskel Film Center,

The health and safety of our guests and staff is our highest priority, and to support efforts to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Gene Siskel Film Center has been closed since Monday, March 16, 2020. As this is a dynamic and unprecedented situation, we will share the most up-to-date information on this page and on our social media.

As Chicago settles into Phase IV - Gradually Resume, more businesses are opening with social distancing and capacity guidelines. As much as we want to be with our live audience and share the wonder of film on the big screen, for the health and safety of our audience and staff, we will not be opening at this time. In addition, it is not feasible for us to open due to capacity limits mandated by the city.

We will continue to closely follow the recommendations of City and State health officials and our parent organization, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a cultural gathering place, this was not a decision made lightly. When the time is right, we will all be together again to share the power and joy of movies.

In the meantime, I do hope that you have been enjoying some of the films we are streaming through Film Center from Your Sofa. Keep checking in for our updated streaming schedule, noting that new films will continue to be added as they're confirmed. A portion of all proceeds will help keep the Film Center operating during this time and help ensure we will all watch movies together again at our theaters.

I also invite you to participate in our dynamic conversations with filmmakers through free virtual Screen to Screen talks. We know that our community of film lovers is just that--a community--and even if we can't watch films together, we can come together to discuss them, screen to screen.

The most recent addition to our slate of virtual programming is the Talking Pictures lecture series. This program presents year-round, multi-week cinema seminars and lectures led by filmmakers, scholars, critics, and community partners. We are currently offering programs from Jonathan Rosenbaum, John Sayles, Sergio Mims, and Jennifer Reeder.

For those memberships that were active when we closed on March 16, we will be able to provide a three-month extension. If you have renewed or purchased a membership since then, we will not renew/activate your membership until we reopen. Read more about membership and contact our membership team here

Beyond purchasing memberships and streaming our films, there are many ways in which you can Support the Film Center. Consider making a donation, leaving us a review on Yelp, or following us on social media.

The Gene Siskel Film Center’s staff can be reached during normal office hours (Monday - Friday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm) at filmcenter@saic.edu.

We truly value our film loving audience and thank you all for your patience during this prolonged intermission.

Sincerely,

Jean de St. Aubin and the entire Gene Siskel Film Center staff
