Join us for a wide-ranging conversation about his career, spanning films from TAXI DRIVER to AMERICAN GIGOLO to OH, CANADA, moderated by Director of Programming Rebecca Fons. Time will be allotted for audience questions.

About Paul Schrader

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, writer, director, producer Paul Schrader grew up with Calvinist parents and graduated from Calvin College. He received an MA in film studies from the UCLA Film School and was a film critic before turning to screenwriting. Schrader started directing in 1978 with BLUE COLLAR and has made over 20 films since, including HARDCORE, AMERICAN GIGOLO, DOG EAT DOG, FIRST REFORMED, THE CARD COUNTER, and OH, CANADA.


Gene Siskel Film Center Renaissance Award

Since 2002, the Gene Siskel Film Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago celebrates the art of film by honoring a filmmaker who advances the art of cinema. Past Renaissance Award honorees have included some of the most respected actors and directors working in the film industry today, such as Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, George Lucas, Jamie Foxx, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Ethan Hawke.

Leading up to An Evening with Paul Schrader, we will screen seven films written and directed by Schrader, demonstrating the auteur’s provocative explorations of faith, his perpetual examinations of characters’ values in conflict with society, and his indelible mark on American cinema.
