“Audience friendly…aesthetically entrancing.”—Neil Young, Hollywood Reporter

In late 19th-century Vietnam, on a lush but remote plantation, a child bride sold to a wealthy landowner to settle her father’s debt is delivered with pomp to her new home and promptly deflowered. Although only fourteen, May (Nguyen Phuong) knows her lowly place as third wife, but discerns that future status hangs on giving birth to a son. Basing the story loosely on the life of her own great-grandmother, director Mayfair relegates the male presence to the sidelines, exploring instead, the complex love-hate sisterhood of three women forced to become rivals in pleasing one man and producing progeny. Curious May is made privy to forbidden erotic dalliances, and she finds herself startlingly attracted to second wife Xuan (Mai Thu Huong May). She soon longs for the unknown and untried, even as she becomes pregnant. In Vietnamese with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
