“An ode to cinema as a machine for remembering.” - Savina Petkova, Little White Lies
“A work of masterful and almost unbearable melancholy.” - Alison Willmore, New York Magazine
Monday, June 19 & Sunday, June 25 | In Wells’ assured, poetic debut feature—the springboard for this series—the adult Sophie reflects on a summer holiday she took with her father Calum (Paul Mescal, in an Academy Award–nominated performance) 20 years earlier. Delicately weaving Sophie’s memories with grainy MiniDV footage from the holiday, a fuller view of Calum emerges, that of a loving father and a man struggling with profound depression. Wells deftly captures the delicacy of memory, exploring the intersections between what we know and what we remember about the people who love us, and the ghosts of our past.
