“Perversely lyrical and beautifully disquieting. Malick’s debut remains one of his greatest achievements... Neither Martin Sheen nor Sissy Spacek has ever been better.” – Time Out New York

Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek play young lovers on a shooting spree across 1950s South Dakota in Terrence Malick's turbulent, gut-grabbing masterwork, BADLANDS. Kit Carruthers, a young garbage collector and his girlfriend Holly Sargis from Fort Dupree, South Dakota, are on the run after killing Holly's father who disagrees with their relationship. On their way towards the Badlands of Montana they leave a trail of dispassionate and seemingly random murders. An intriguing narrative without judgements, and lacking the usual sensational approach of the genre, the script was based upon the true story of the Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate murders of 1958. ♫ Features Erik Satie’s 3 Morceaux en forme de poire.

Some combinations of scene and sound are so striking they become irrevocably linked in our cultural memory. Well-timed tunes punctuate the edit, trigger strong emotions, and communicate unspoken stakes. Classical music with its sweeping instrumentation shines in many iconic movies and is a joy to experience in the cinema among a rapt audience. In collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who mounts a live presentation of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY with a full orchestra and choir accompaniment on January 9 and 10, the Siskel Film Center presents our favorite films featuring indelible classical music cues.

The Film Center is ADA accessible. This presentation will be projected without open captions. The theater is hearing-loop equipped. For accessibility requests, please email filmcenter@saic.edu
