"What's so distinctively charming is the easygoing tone, which manages to turn black comedy into a strangely gentle, touching and delicate affair." - Geoff Andrew, Time Out
"The sweet assurance and guerrilla wit of Robert Altman's vintage ensemble films makes a serenely captivating return." - Janet Maslin, New York Times
Thursday, September 18, 6:00 p.m. | Holly Springs, Mississippi is home to the catfish enchilada and a boisterous extended family that revolves around widowed matriarch “Cookie” Orcutt (Patricia Neal). Everyone knows everyone else and amicably marinates in everyone’s business—until Cookie is found dead from a gunshot wound. Robert Altman’s career does not lack for sprawling ensemble pieces, and this one features stellar turns from Charles S. Dutton, Liv Tyler, Julianne Moore, and Glenn Close, among others. Yet COOKIE’S FORTUNE might be the first Altman picture that’s downright friendly, a spring breeze that swirls through Holly Springs and goes down like a glass of Wild Turkey. (Chicago Film Society)
