“Spirited and sensuous.” - Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter

Saturday, March 25, 3:45pm | Acclaimed Swedish director Lasse Hallström (MY LIFE AS A DOG, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES and SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN - CEUFF 2012) paints a lush and sensuous portrait of the life of pioneering artist Hilma af Klint, who was largely written off by the art world during her lifetime. Beguiling and magnetic, Hilma died in 1944, unknown and unrecognized as the woman who invented abstract painting, displacing Kandinsky, Malevich, and Mondrian as the initiators of Modernism. From her invincible belief in spirits, to her unconventional romantic life and close circle of fellow female artists who converged around Hilma and her atelier, HILMA is a vivid biography of a woman who chose to remain true to her vision as an artist, despite working in a hostile, misogynistic world where women were not expected to express themselves and still were not allowed to vote.

The acronym SWAN stands for Support Women Artists Now. International SWAN Day is a worldwide initiative designed to showcase the power and diversity of women’s creativity. Every year since 2008, people all around the world have created events that celebrate women artists on the last Saturday of March. And it all started here in Illinois
with the creation of WITASWAN (Women in the Audience Support Women Artists Now) in 2004!

The SWAN mission has five goals:

  • To shine a spotlight on women artists – especially artists who are often marginalized by mainstream arts and media organizations because of their race, class, sexual preference, gender identity, disability or other issues.
  • To give women artists opportunities to practice and improve their skills at marketing, budgeting, fundraising, and other skills that they need as producers of arts events.
  • To help women artists build support networks for themselves by working with other artists in their communities to produce events featuring women artists.
  • To encourage women audience members to support women artists by using their power as feminist arts consumers.
  • To have fun!

So, come join us at HILMA on March 25 th and Support Women Artists Now!
