"An engrossing, affecting tribute to a formidable woman and her family." - Wendy Ide, Screen International

"A gripping, profoundly touching film with a deep well of pathos. It’s one of Salles’ best." - David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

In Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s, despite living under the grip of Brazil’s military rule, the Paivas family—former congressman Rubens, matriarch Eunice, and their five children—keep a jovial and lively home, where freedom and expression is celebrated. When Rubens is suddenly ushered away to provide “deposition” to military interrogators, Eunice begins a years-long journey to expose the government’s role in the disappearances of thousands of innocent citizens. Based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s memoir, and with a powerhouse lead performance from Fernanda Torres, Walter Salles’ (CENTRAL STATION, THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES) latest is a galvanizing and gripping portrait of defiance in the face of dictatorship. Academy Award® nominee for Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, and Best Actress (Fernanda Torres).
