Saturday, January 17, 9:00 a.m. | Kevin Jerome Everson’s meditative and immersive PARK LANES clocks in at eight hours: the run time of the average American work day. Free from the trappings of standard documentaries – there is no expert commentary or voice over narration – PARK LANES observes the daily grind of workers at a Virginia factory that produces bowling alley supplies and equipment. Unbroken, focused sequences observe workers on the line, their acts of assemblage transforming into a choreographed dance. “Park Lanes” is the name of a bowling alley in Everson’s hometown of Mansfield, Ohio. As the hours tick by, one cannot help but consider the final destination of the products being made, the leisure time, bowling shoes, drink specials, and good times. From its title to its run time, PARK LANES demands reflection: on labor, on class, on endurance, on perseverance. Clock in, and get to work. As intended by the filmmaker, program includes no intermissions.
