“A bewitching walk on the wild side…Willem Dafoe is superb…a film that could be Ferrara’s best yet.”—Xan Brooks, Guardian

“One suspects Pasolini himself would have approved of casting Willem Dafoe.”—Peter Debruge, Variety

The final twenty-four hours in the life of Italian filmmaker, poet and political activist Pier Paolo Pasolini (SALÒ) are speculatively recreated by maverick director Ferrara (WELCOME TO NEW YORK, BAD LIEUTENANT). The routines of everyday reality are balanced with creative flights of the mind as Pasolini is seen working on his novel Petrolio, negotiating the release of SALÒ, and ending the day fatefully cruising for sex. Bearing a startling resemblance to Pasolini, Willem Dafoe projects moody depths: self-possessed and cool to journalists and peers, boyishly deferential to his aged mother (movingly played by Adriana Asti), and solicitously patient with the nervous rent boy who will be implicated in his brutal murder. Ferrara’s insight into Pasolini’s psyche is manifest in cryptic scenes dramatized from Petrolio, and the tour de force of a gay and lesbian bacchanal created from the filmmaker’s gestating film project PORNO-TEO-KOLOSSAL, with his former lover and companion Ninetto Davoli as Epifanio, a pilgrim seeking the way to paradise. In English, Italian, and French with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
