Saturday, January 3, 11:00 a.m. | Start the new year by experiencing four seasons in a day with back to back screenings of Eric Rohmer’s perennially delightful quartet: A TALE OF SPRINGTIME (CONTE DE PRINTEMPS, 1990, 107 min.), A TALE OF WINTER (CONTE D'HIVER, 1992, 114 min.), A TALE OF SUMMER (CONTE D'ÉTÉ, 1996, 115 min), and A TALE OF AUTUMN (CONTE D'AUTOMNE, 1998, 111 min.). Cinema’s expert of romance, each film in Rohmer’s tetralogy follows different relationships, chronicling their ups and downs, misunderstandings and disappointments, and all matters and rhythms of the heart. Set against idyllic French backdrops, each tale is shaped by the season: in springtime, a budding friendship is challenged; in winter, Rohmer’s protagonist prays for a miracle; in summer, hot desire commands the heart, and in autumn, evolution and human nature are at their most humorous. This breezy but deeply thoughtful collection will start your year on a note of passion, love, and lots of French wine. Program includes three intermissions.
