THE THING

John Carpenter’s THE THING may be the best sci-fi action horror movie ever made. Adapted from the same short story that inspired Howard Hawks’ 1951 classic THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, the film is pure Carpenter in its realization. Characteristically visceral and spare, the action of this disturbing masterpiece takes place at an isolated Antarctic research station whose inhabitants are being hunted one by one by an unseen predator. Legendary for its groundbreaking, gory practical effects, the film's suffocating atmosphere is driven by Ennio Morricone’s minimalist, pulsating synth score (clearly inspired by Carpenter’s own iconic musical style) deepening the movie's sense of absolute loneliness and dread.

From early cinema’s demons to Universal’s classic creatures to Toho’s city-destroying kaiju to countless contemporary permutations of all of the above, Creature Features showcase cinema’s incredible ability to transform a character into an irresistible other. The eight films in this series trace creature-making craftsmanship from in-camera practical effects to digitally-enhanced creature augmentation and offer a slate of scary and sweet strangers to match every spooky season mood.
