“From recounting just the bare bones of what is seen on Cleo’s journey around Paris on that sad day, Varda’s endless and insatiable curiosity is perceivable and that is the real key. She understands that the ordinary has its own draws and wonders.” - Adam Scovell, Little White Lies

“Quietly touching and profound, it epitomizes the youthful delight Varda always shows for the tools at her disposal and her sensitive and easeful way of expressing the sways and shifts of life, love and desire.” - Wally Hammond, Time Out

Tuesday, April 4 at 5pm | An essential film of the French New Wave, Agnès Varda’s masterful exploration of femininity, the male gaze, and mortality takes place over the course of an early evening as a young woman (Corinne Marchand) anticipates the results of a biopsy. In the hours that she waits, Cléo - beautiful, vain, and self-absorbed - wanders the streets of Paris, overwhelmed with dread but unable to find comfort. Feeling seen but not known, wanted but not needed, Cléo’s meetings with friends and interactions with strangers take on new dimensions as her diagnosis draws near and as she reflects, often quite literally, on her life and the impending possibility that she may be “running out of time.” Sixty years on, Varda’s delicate, restrained masterpiece remains an eloquent realization of female identity.
