"A film this raw made with such a steady, assured hand only comes along once in a while. We should take notice." - Jourdain Searles, Hollywood Reporter

"Lauren Hadaway has made a sports movie, a queer romance, a thriller, and, ultimately, a character study." - Drew Gregory, Autostraddle

Lauren Hadaway's award winning, unapologetic feature film debut THE NOVICE is a bold, taut portrait of obsession and isolation based on Hadaway's personal experience as a competitive collegiate rower. Alex (Isabelle Furhman, who won the Best Actress award at the Tribeca Film Festival for her performance) is a queer college freshman who - despite not being adept on the water - joins her university's rowing team, and is quickly consumed by her goal to make it to the top varsity boat, regardless of the phsyical, psychological or social consequences. Cinematographer Todd Martin (another Tribeca award winner) creates a sweaty, textured depiction of what you can lose when you're aiming to win at all costs, and with this nuanced and explosive film Hadaway announces herself as a new visionary to watch.
